GO Transit, Toronto's regional rail system, is bringing Milton its first new rail service since 2002 with the addition of two new weekday trains on the Milton line, one in the morning arriving at Union Station and one in the evening departing Union Station. The new trains are scheduled to begin making trips as early as June.
GO Transit said that during peak periods more than 80 percent of Milton line trips are operating over seated capacity. Since May 2008, it has been accommodating the growing ridership by using MP40 locomotives to increase train lengths from 10 to 12 cars, creating room for 300 more people on the trains.
GO Transit's Milton train service operates on Canadian Pacific Railway's track, and Canadian Pacific will provide the crews for the new trips on the Milton line. Milton is the third-busiest rail line on the GO network, with approximately 27,000 daily riders.
