G&W Reports Decreased June and Second Quarter Rail Traffic

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) has reported a decrease of 5.5 percent, or 40,956 carloads, in the second quarter of 2016 compared to the 2015 second quarter. Carloads totaled 706,916. G&W’s North American Operations reported a decline in traffic of 6.7 percent, or 27,765 carloads, to 386,123 carloads for the second quarter.

For the month of June, G&W’s traffic was 244,197 carloads, down 3.9 percent, or 10,016 carloads, compared to last June. North American Operations reported a decline in traffic of 6,048 carloads, or 4.4 percent, to 131,338 carloads for the month. The decrease was primarily due to reduced shipments of coal & coke, metals, pulp & paper and minerals & stone traffic.

The largest decline in North American Traffic for June was in coal & coke, which decreased by 12.3 percent, or 2,361 carloads, primarily due to decreased shipments of utility coal in G&W’s Northeast and Midwest regions. Metals traffic was down by 11.4 percent, or 1,472 carloads, mostly due to decreased shipments in G&W’s Southern and Canada Regions.

G&W’s North American Operations represents approximately 60 percent of the company’s total operating revenues and approximately 80 percent of G&W’s total income from operations.
