Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) has reported a decrease of 4.2 percent, or 32,836 carloads, in the third quarter of 2016 compared to the 2015 third quarter. Carloads totaled 739,814.
For the month of September, G&W’s traffic was 244,796 carloads, down 3.7 percent, or 9,498 carloads, compared to last September.
North American Operations reported a decline in traffic of 5,336 carloads, or 3.9 percent, to 132,329 carloads for the month. The decrease was primarily due to reduced coal & coke shipments, pulp & paper, and chemicals & plastics traffic. The largest decline was in metallic ores, which decreased by 28.7 percent, or 547 carloads. Coal & coke shipments dropped by 13.1 percent, or 3,153 carloads, to 20,988 carloads, due to decreased shipments of utility coal in G&W’s Central and Northeast regions. Waste, with a total of 4,374 carloads was up by 18.6 percent, or 686 carloads.
G&W’s North American Operations represents approximately 60 percent of the company’s total operating revenues and approximately 80 percent of G&W’s total income from operations.
