Union Pacific is investing $18 million on its trackage between Linwood and Topeka, Kan., where crews began working April 4 on improvements that include the removal and installation of ties as well as installation of new rail.
When the project is completed in September, crews will have removed and installed 17,700 ties, spread 15,400 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed, renewed the road surfaces at 85 crossings and installed more than 30 miles of new rail.
In 2007 and 2008, Union Pacific invested nearly $95 million for capital projects in Kansas. This year, the company plans to invest a total of $1.8 billion on track infrastructure across its 32,000-mile system.
