Valley Metro Sets Date for Northwest Extension Opening

Valley Metro, which provides public transit to greater Phoenix and Maricopa County, will open its second light rail extension in Phoenix on March 19, 2016. The opening date was announced last week at a milestone event where Valley Metro marked the arrival of trains, as vehicle tests were conducted in preparation for the extension’s opening.

The 3.2-mile project extends light rail north on 19th Avenue from Montebello to Dunlap Avenue and includes light rail stations at Glendale, Northern and Dunlap avenues.

“This is a significant day for Phoenix,” said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. “The opening of the Northwest light rail extension will ease travel to school, work and entertainment. With the additional three-miles of track, riders have access to a 26-mile system, making connections from Dunlap Avenue, to downtown Phoenix, Tempe and into the heart of Mesa.”

“The new 3.2-mile extension adds to our already existing 23 miles of light rail connectivity,” said Phoenix Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela. “Light rail to date has exceeded expectations by generating $8.2 billion in economic development and attracting riders at record levels. The Northwest Extension will connect six schools, places of worship, senior living facilities and approximately 300 businesses. This will provide another massive economic boost for District 5 and Phoenix and provide a crucial connection for thousands to the entire Valley.”

Testing will continue until opening day.

“It’s exciting to see the trains moving farther north on 19th Avenue getting ready to connect to new businesses, schools and neighborhoods,” said Phoenix Councilmember and Valley Metro Rail Board Chair Thelda Williams. “Testing of the system is a critical next step before service begins in 2016.”
