G&W October Rail Traffic Down 4.6 Percent

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) has reported a decrease of 4.6 percent, or 11,865 carloads, for October rail traffic compared to October 2015. Carloads totaled 245,344.

North American Operations reported a decline in traffic of 2,693 carloads, or 2 percent, to 134,939 carloads for the month. The decrease was primarily due to reduced minerals & stone traffic, partially offset by increased coal & coke traffic. The largest decline was in metallic ores, which decreased by 17.9 percent, or 348 carloads. Mineral & stone shipments dropped by 11.6 percent, or 2,292 carloads, to 17,420 carloads, due to decreased shipments of rock salt and frac sand in G&W’s Northeast Region. Auto & auto parts, with a total of 2,684 carloads, were up by 44.6 percent, or 828 carloads.

G&W’s North American Operations represents approximately 60 percent of the company’s total operating revenues and approximately 80 percent of G&W’s total income from operations.
